Today was our first experience with Hapik. I was very impressed at first, and my two young boys were slowing but surely gaining confidence and having fun. My 5 year old worked up the courage to do the highest rope course, and as he was waiting his turn to cross the last rope path down to the base, his shoe got caught in the rope and fell off. The end of the course is at a downward angle, so the shoe kept slipping farther away as he tried to catch it. The guy working the rope course was not paying attention, looked up and thought my son was trying to cut in line behind someonex He hatefully and loudly yelled at him to stop. A female worker on the ground noticed this and immediately stepped in to intervene and let the guy know he was just trying to catch his shoe. By that time, my son was already crying from being yelled at. He is five years old. He had just completed the highest course, adrenaline racing, feeling proud of himself, only to be yelled at in anger by a strange grown man. No child should be yelled at that way. This male employee tried to apologize after his co worker explained it was an accident, but that didn’t take back the experience. My son spent the rest of the time feeling really sad, embarrassed, nervous that he was going to do something else wrong, and scared of this employee. When I confronted the staff about this, they were quick to give the same excuse: “You have to understand, sometimes we get kids in here that just don’t listen” - as if that makes it ok. There is a big difference between being stern with a child who isn’t listening and yelling at them because you’re frustrated and overstimulated. My son was just trying to catch his shoe, I’d hate to see how a high energy kid (like a child with behavioral struggles) would be treated.
