A friend and I decided to spend the afternoon in Ballard on Saturday, shopping in various stores. After shopping along Market, we made our way down Ballard Ave. As we entered Horseshoe the employee said hello and proceeded to ask me what I had in my shopping bag. What extremely rude behavior and passive aggressive. Insulting an honest person willing to spend money in the community, supporting a small business, rather than a big box store. Not my loss, only yours, you missed a decent purchase. A purchase that was instead made a few doors down.

Occasionally has super cute clothes. Can be a bit pricey. The real issue for me is the staff. The owner has clearly drilled into their heads to be extra friendly with customers. Please stop this. It is exhausting and it drives me away. It’s the same conversation attempts over and over and over again. “Oh are you out at the market today?” “Oh what a great sweater.” By the sixth time, I’m over it. I know it’s a hold over from when the owner probably worked big retail herself but as someone who also worked retail for decades, just stop. I know big stores like j crew and banana republic would even have on their customer surveys, “were you greeted upon entering?” Even worse, the stores would insist all employees try to have one meaningful engagement with every customer. They would ALWAYS give the same examples. 1. Ask what the customer is up to for the day. 2. Compliment them. 3. Ask what they’re shopping for. Can I just say how exhausting and fake it is? Please stop. Please. Let me come in the store, acknowledge me, AND THEN LET ME SHOP IN PEACE. My twenty year old sweatshirt with a tiny hole doesn’t need five people complimenting it before I even make it half way through the store. I hate that. Hate it. Let me shop. Let that be enough. You don’t need to be unfriendly but give me some space. Last time I was in I spent several hundred dollars. Today I had about eight things I wanted and I ended up walking out. I felt trapped by their over exuberance and desperation to connect. It was stifling and uncomfortable and made me feel like I personally wasn’t valued, that I was a project to check off because this was the owners old school expectation of how to treat customers. The store already seems to be well over staffed. With all of them clamoring to have the same banal, performative conversation, I can’t do it. I had to walk out. I’ll try again but probably not till next season. I’ll wait till April or May to have another batch of well worn, scripted conversations on cue.

Horseshoe is a gem in our Ballard neighborhood. The women that work there are kind, authentic, and genuinely want to help. Normally, I am not a big shopper, I don't like buying things for myself and generally get in and get out of a retail space. Horseshoe is different. My experiences are have always been lovely and smile filled. The space is one that I am eager to step into, never rushing to step out. Some of my favorite wardrobe pieces and gifts have come from that happy little boutique. Please go. Treat yourself. You won't regret it.
