He didn’t just take my picture. No, sir. He looked at me the way a man sizes up a good pawnshop revolver, turning it over in his mind, weighing the story behind it. Somewhere between the first click and the last, he managed to catch something in me I didn’t know was there. Not just the shine, but the grit. Not just the face, but the thing behind the eyes, the thing you don’t talk about at the diner. By the time it was over, I felt like I’d been cleaned up, sharpened, and set out under the good light. Strange man, that Kyle. Real good at what he does.
