I’ve been training Iaido at Newcastle Aikido since September 2025 (so training for three months as I write this), and I came in as a complete beginner. I’d tried a beginner’s class elsewhere about ten years ago and walked away because it felt pretty unfriendly, so I was very nervous turning up this time. That nervousness disappeared fast. My first class was excellent. Sensei Darius made it clear straight away that the hardest part of training is simply turning up, and honestly, he was spot on. Everyone was welcoming, friendly, and after class we stood around chatting like normal humans. I was encouraged to come back, and it genuinely felt meant. The teaching strikes a great balance between respect, ceremony, and approachability. Etiquette and tradition matter, but Sensei will also drop the occasional dry joke or quip, which keeps things grounded. Corrections are clear, thoughtful, always constructive and never ego-driven. The dojo itself is small but has a fantastic atmosphere. No macho nonsense, no weird vibes, just people who love the art and want others to enjoy it too. It feels like a real community. The thing I love most is the calm. Once I’m on the mat in seiza, everything else switches off. That alone keeps me coming back.

An incredibly warm and welcoming community run by beautiful people. The dojo is a place to challenge yourself, find connection to self and to others, and of course have fun. Newcastle Aikido feeds the soul

Very welcoming, caring and well rounded dojo with a deep respect for tradition and strong focus on personal development. Darius and his senseii are focused on building a truely supportive sense of community, while being attentive to each student's individual needs in their martial arts, fitness, social and personal development. Always brings me joy when I'm there early for my class and get to see the youthful exuberance, determination, competition and teamwork of the kids classes and the skillful way the teachers guide them towards adulthood.

We moved to Hamilton in 2021 and soon heard about the Newcastle Aikido dojo through school connections. I signed my then 9 year old son up to help him make new connections and to my delight he has thrived not only in his martial arts skills but as a young person. Sensei Darius and other teachers not only teach the skills and art of Aikido but they instill a sense of belonging, self-confidence, self-respect, and respect for others into the young lives of their students. The sense of pride my son has in himself, without ego, is a marvel to behold and his passion for the art of Aikido remains strong. He has made some wonderful connections and we have felt very welcomed into the Aikido community. Best decision I've made and I'm grateful beyond words.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We have been sending our daughter and son to this incredible Aikido dojo for several years, and I can't recommend it highly enough! From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed into a warm and nurturing environment that feels like a second home. The sensei are truly fantastic—knowledgeable, patient, and dedicated to the growth of each child. They not only teach the techniques of Aikido but also instill invaluable life skills such as discipline, respect, and self-confidence. It's amazing to see how Aikido has positively impacted our kids. They have developed a strong sense of self and resilience that extends beyond the dojo. The camaraderie among the students and the supportive atmosphere foster a love for martial arts that is truly inspiring. If you're looking for a place where your children can learn, grow, and thrive, this dojo is the perfect choice. We are so grateful to be part of this wonderful community!
