I came back from my Japan trip about a month ago and bought a box of Royce Chocolate Uji Matcha from Kyoto after getting a sample at one of their stores in Japan. It was honestly one of the best chocolates I had during my trip. Smooth, rich, and perfectly balanced. On 12/17/2025, since I live in the Bay Area, I decided to visit a local Royce store. I asked what their top selling flavor was, and the cashier recommended the Au Lait. I then asked if my wife and I could sample it, but the cashier said they only had matcha available for sampling. I was not really sure how to react, since I personally do not like buying chocolate blindly without tasting it first, especially when there are multiple flavors. I assume they did not want to open a new box just for sampling, but it still felt awkward and disappointing. In the end, we left without buying anything. The chocolate itself is amazing based on my experience in Japan, but this visit felt uncomfortable and discouraging since we could not try any flavors beyond matcha.

The ghana bitter chocolate here is phenomenal, but even more noteworthy was the amazing service provided by Jacqueline - she was so helpful, patient, and knowledgeable when helping me select the right gift for a loved one. She really went the extra mile - I’ll definitely be coming back! Thank you!

Excellent chocolate, smooth and flavorful. Tastings helps narrow down the choices.

In A Nutshell: -Royce Chocolate from Hokkaido, Japan is hands-down the best in the world. -This location opened up in Nov. 2020. -The first time I tried this chocolate was during one of my trips to Tokyo at the Narita Airport. -The Bay Area is so lucky to have this so close since it's very hard to find. -The prices aren't bad either at $18 a package. Overall, if you love chocolate, grab some Royce!
