Amazing museum gift shop — prices are $$$, but if you don’t find something here, then you didn’t want to buy anything.

Before I begin, I’d like to say that the gift store (Uptown) is absolutely beautiful, with a wide variety of items available for purchase. Earlier today, after visiting the museum with my daughter and niece, we stopped by the store. Upon entering, we were warmly greeted by a kind older woman, which made for a lovely first impression. However, as we browsed, I began to notice the older security guard following us around the store. This immediately made me feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. As a Black woman accompanied by my Black daughter and niece, I felt it was important to be sure I wasn’t imagining the behavior, so I asked them to move to a different area of the store. When I noticed the guard repositioning himself once again near us, my concerns were confirmed. I fully understand that security personnel have a job to do, but the manner in which this individual conducted himself made us feel singled out and scrutinized. I addressed this with him directly, expressing that his actions were not subtle and had created a negative environment for us. I had intended to make a purchase, but ultimately decided not to because of the discomfort we experienced. I’m sharing this feedback with the hope that steps will be taken to ensure all customers—especially people of color—feel welcome and respected in your store. Training security staff on how to balance their duties with inclusive and non-discriminatory behavior would go a long way in improving the overall experience.
