I am updating my rating from the 5 stars I gave this location 8 years ago when it operated as Cooperhaus K9, which I loved, to 2 stars based on my recent experience with Urban Dog House. The biggest shift is the atmosphere and methodology. The previous training style was defined by effective, positive lessons led by a passionate trainer. However, the current style, led by the same trainer (now owner), has changed the experience entirely. It has shifted from a learning-based style to one that focuses more on pack-leadership driven by authority, which I felt relied too heavily on forced corrective measures and compliance. (It is important to note that this review is based on my primary lessons with the owner-trainer. I had one substitute lesson with Steve, whose positive style I found excellent, and which I believe reflects the positive feedback others have shared.) My experience highlighted three main factors influencing my rating change: -- Atmosphere: The training environment was tense, always involving a loudspeaker, and felt unnecessarily high-pressure for both dog and owner. The lessons were short on patience and often had a blaming tone on the owners. -- Instructional Consistency: I received conflicting guidance, such as being told to use treats for motivation one moment and then being questioned / challenged for using them right the next lesson. The quality and tone of the training were noticeably inconsistent, creating significant unpredictability from one lesson to the next. -- Blanket approach. There is little knowledge shared or applied on breed-specific traits or behaviors, with all dogs being trained the same way, often defaulting to heavy reliance on prong collar corrections. On the positive side, I found some of the techniques shared to be helpful, and it remains an effective place for dog socialization and calming reactivity. There are some instances of positive enforcement, but again, corrective measures using the prong-collar seems to be the predominant method. Overall, the current training appears to prioritize absolute authority and obedience. I sincerely hope the facility can return to the balanced, effective training approach I valued in the past, one that builds a positive, consistent and lasting working relationship with your dog.

Me: The guy in the neighborhood getting pulled around by his labradoodle. People cross the street when they see us coming. Finally, we decided it was time for professional help. We booked a 1 hour individual training session with Steve last weekend. Steve was beyond helping in helping me understand our dog. After even just one session, I was armed with tools to help our dog better understand our commands and expectations. I was beyond impressed that even with just an hour of training, we noticed immediate results on subsequent walks. I’m looking forward to joining group sessions next and continuing our training journey. Outside of the training, I got a nice tour of the facility as we were looking for a better boarding option vs using Rover where we had several issues. I was really impressed by not only the facility but also all of the staff who really came across as loving their job and as animal lovers. Great experience overall and really grateful I found this place!

5 Stars – The Best Place for Your Pup! Urban Dog House is by far the best place for your pet! We’ve been taking Cali here for over 5 years now, and it’s the only place we truly trust. Steve and his team are amazing with dogs — they genuinely care and know what they’re doing. We started with group lessons when Cali was just a puppy, learning obedience (and honestly, they trained us just as much as her, haha!). As she grew up and we began traveling, Urban Dog House became her second home. Their daycare and boarding staff always keep Cali happy, healthy, and active — even teaching her how to swim during the summer! They go above and beyond, sending us photos and updates when we’re away so we never have to worry. Thank you, Steve and the whole crew, for being such a wonderful, trustworthy team. You’re not just trainers — you’re family to us and Cali!

Steve and his team at Urban Dog House in Milpitas are absolutely fantastic! From the moment we arrived, they made us and our dog, Rocket, feel incredibly comfortable and welcome. Their warm, professional approach put us at ease, and Rocket had an absolute blast during his swimming session. The facility is top-notch, clean, and perfectly suited for dogs. We’re already looking forward to making swimming sessions a regular routine! For anyone in the Bay Area looking for exceptional swimming and boarding services, Urban Dog House is a 10/10. Highly recommend!
